Sizing Rule of Thumb

Plan on about 4–6 cubic feet of fresh-food space per adult, plus 2–3 cubic feet of freezer space per person. Add more if you buy in bulk or cook most meals at home.

Leave Room to Breathe

Leave about 1 inch at the top and back and 1/8 inch on the sides (check your model's manual), and make sure the doors can open fully past walls and counters. A cramped refrigerator runs hotter and wears out sooner.
